Electronics have consumed our everyday lives in many aspects. We no longer have free time, if a person is bored or even if they are occupied, they will distract themselves by using technology. I conducted a five-day trail where I monitored every time I picked up my phone, or used my laptop.
The average time I spent on my phone and computer per day was about five and a half hours. On the weekend I used my electronics a lot more than I did in the week. I did not track how long I played video games or watched Netflix for, but as a guess I would say that would be another three hours per day. If you do the math, I am in school for eight hours a day. Now with that and the amount of technology I consume, it leaves me with eight hours to eat, shower, sleep, and drive anywhere. My life is being consumed by technology and maybe that is why I am only seeing my girlfriend everyday after school.
I have screen addiction, when I am not doing anything I am on my phone. I played mobile games for six hours in the five days. I am so distant from my world because I have fallen into what I like to call my electronic schedule.
Wake up, Snapchat.
During class, text and check email.
After class, Xbox and mobile games.
Before sleep Netflix on my Xbox.
During all of this I have a fifty-man soccer group chat that is very active. If I did not have soccer every day, I would not communicate with more than five to ten people. However, with seeing so many people everyday I feel it is necessary to communicate so much with my phone because I always want to be connected with my teammates and friends. I do not have a lot of spare time between homework, school, and soccer so I am constantly on my phone trying to see what is going on with the rest of my companions.
My electronic experience in the past five days also lead to people around me getting annoyed when I am on my phone or Xbox. People don’t tend to get bothered if I check my texts or emails, however if I spend a large majority of my time on my screens around others it becomes a problem.
I thought that if I used my phone sporadically instead of using my phone a couple times a day for longer periods of time I would be on it less and people would be less annoyed. This was not the case, I used my phone and laptop a lot more than I had hoped too and the frustration of others is still prevalent. My main problem is once I open my phone I than need to check all of my notifications. Thus, leading me to be on my phone more than I want.
My research has provided a great point for me as now I will try and limit how much I use my screens.
Below is the order in which I used my phone and what I used it for.
